Reference Services

The New Brunswick Legislative Library exists in order to serve all the members and staff of the Legislature as well as NB government departments. Every 3 months we send out our new books list, the Legislative Library Accessions List, full of great books that will inform you on critical issues, help boost your job performance, or just simply entertain you.

But the Library staff can do a whole lot more than loan you great books!

Over the next few weeks we'll be letting you know about some of our resources, and how they may be useful to you, but the true nerve centre of the Library is our Reference Services Desk. Our reference staff are trained to help with all kinds of questions; from “ready reference” questions which take only a few moments to answer, to more in depth inquiries.

Our training and resources allow us to help you:

  • find recent, or older archived, newspaper articles
  • find various legislative materials such as bills, acts, regulations and Hansard debates surrounding the passage of bills through the House
  • track down elusive material, whether it be government documents, books, articles, photographs...if we don't have it, we'll help you find out who does.
  • request transcripts of current, or past, Daily Sittings of the House from the Hansard Office
  • track down statistics and facts
  • identify proper citation formats

Perhaps you would like to brush up your online research skills, or learn how to evaluate the validity of information you find online.  Maybe you wish you knew how to search our online catalogue more effectively.

If there's anything that you think we may be able to help you with, please drop us an email or give us a call. You'll find that we pride ourselves on being helpful, friendly and professional.

And finally, we must assure you that all enquiries are handled in a confidential manner.

The Legislative Library is open from 8:15 – 5:00 Monday to Friday, and when the House is in session, the Library remains open until the sitting adjourns for the day.  You can reach the Reference Desk at [email protected] or 453-2338.
